Christian communities across Manipur held candlelight vigils and prayer services this week to mark the third anniversary of the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, which resulted in the destruction of more than 360 churches and the displacement of tens of thousands of Kuki-Zo Christians.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) issued a statement calling on the central government to expedite relief, rehabilitation, and rebuilding of destroyed places of worship. "Three years on, many families remain in relief camps. The silence of the state cannot be the answer to their suffering," the statement read.

In Churachandpur district, the Zomi Students' Federation organized a memorial march attended by thousands, carrying crosses symbolizing the churches destroyed. Survivors described how entire villages were emptied overnight.

The National Commission for Minorities has submitted a report to the Home Ministry recommending a special task force for reconstruction of religious sites, but implementation remains pending.
